India's poultry industry has transformed from a mere backyard activity into a major commercial activity in just four decades. India is now the world's 4th largest egg producer and the 5th largest producer of broilers. The Indian poultry market witnessed an increasing trend over the past five years, growing at a CAGR of 11.39%.
During 2010-2018, present urban market accounts for about 80% of demand of poultry meat. In India, the production and consumption of broiler meat has been witnessing a stagnated growth over the years. India's per capita consumption of the poultry meat is estimated at around 3.1kg/year, which is low compared to the world average of around 17 kg per year. Processed chicken meat constitutes about 5%-10% of the total chicken meat production, but according to the estimates, demand for processed chicken meat is growing between 15-20% per year. This creates a demand supply gap that needs to be addressed by the industry by investing in processed poultry meat plants.
The egg production in India increased to 92.63 billion in 2018 from 66.50 billion in 2011, increasing at a CAGR of 5.68%. The domestic demand for the eggs is expected to drive the market in long term as a 4%-5% increase in demand, annually for eggs is expected. The per capita availability of egg has increased from 61 in 2013-14 to 66 in 2015-16. In 2016-17 it is 69.
Egg production is also expanding in the states of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Chhattisgarh, which contribute about 80% of the market share. Other layer breeds include Lohman, Bovans and Hyline. The layer birds are mainly concentrated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra and Punjab. A common observation is that the eggs sold in India are mostly in bulk quantities without branding in most cases.
The Government of Bihar has achieved remarkable progress in the poultry sector, especially, broiler production, but as far as the layer farming & hatchery is concerned, the state has to go a very long way. Broiler production also limited to small and medium units. The Government of Bihar is in its bid to develop the poultry sector is promoting entrepreneurship development which will further enhance its growth and foster gainful employment in the rural sector. The entrepreneurs in the state can also contribute to its developmentby conducting knowledge and skill based awareness programs through various schemes launched by the state government and helps establish market linkages.
